FOOTBRIDGE OVER THE PO RIVER IN TURIN

The proposal for this footbridge over the river Po was based on three principles: zero interference with the river course avoiding placing structural elements in the riverbed, finding a harmonious solution with the river and its surroundings using materials and forms suited to the location, and finally, forming a spacial structure characterized by a forceful and varying perspective, easy legible when crossing the walkway or from the shore.

The structure consists of a double arch arrangement with lower deck where the arches are circular in plan and asymmetric with respect to the centerline of the river. The stays have been designed to follow a zigzag pattern and support the deck at its centerline instead of, as is usually the case for this kind of structures, at its edges. These provisions give the footbridge a spacial appearance and a very expressive form.
