  • Diameter of segmented primary mirror: 11.34 m
  • Equivalent circular diameter of telescope: 10.40 m
  • Total height of telescope: 29.00 m


During a couple of years, this large telescope will be the largest in the world in terms of primary mirror diameter.  The conceptual design of the telescope structure had to consider very demanding static and dynamic requirements: limited weights, high-frequency vibration limits, maximum size of the elevation ring. etc.

In order to meet these requirements, optimization techniques have been developed for the analysis of the different structural subsystems: primary mirror bed; upper prestressed tube and frame system for holding and positioning of the secundary mirror; azimuth ring; mount, etc.
