MADRID SPORTS ARENA

Project details

Technical Data

  • Roof truss span: 114 m
  • Capacity: 9.000 – 16.500 spectators

Description

In the wake of the fire that damaged the old arena in 2001, the regional council of Madrid decided to rebuild the sports centre. While conserving the lateral stands which hadn’t been destroyed by the flames, they aimed at converting the building into a modern and more functional multipurpose arena.

The structure of the stands is made out of prestressed reinforced concrete and the new main roof is composed of large tubular steel trusses.

Top down excavation allowed three basement floors to be added below the old court while carrying out the above grade structure simultaneously.
