The engineering consultants MC2 Estudio de Ingeniería, S.L. was established in 1988. The company is directed by Julio Martínez Calzón, Doctor in Civil Engineering and past holder of the chair in Special Steel Structures at the Civil Engineering College at Madrid Polytechnic University until 2003, and a renowned specialist in the area of structures with over forty years’ experience behind him. A team of engineers design and develop all manner of structural projects and construction procedures for both civil works and building:

In all of these works, MC2 Estudio de Ingeniería, S.L. provides in-depth knowledge of structural operation, based on accumulated experience in the design of complex and innovative types of steel, composite, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges, as well as unique, purpose-built buildings, roofs and special structures. In the civil works area, the company has designed structures which have been the first of their kind in Spain and, in certain cases, in the world: These structures include:

  • The first composite bridge in Spain (the Juan Bravo overpass crossing the main thoroughfare of the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, 1968), incorporating several innovative features (resistant white concrete, prestressed pre-connection of the deck slab, use of Corten type rustproof steel)Corten)
  • The first deployment of double composite action in the world (Bridge over the River Ciérvana, Bilbao, 1977)
  • The first externally prestressed bridge in Spain (Bridge over the old river bed of the Turia, Valencia, 1989)
  • The first use of cooper cladding to a bridge (Arenal Bridge, Cordoba, 1991)
  • The first employment of structural capacity stainless steel in a bridge (Granadilla Industrial Estate, Tenerife, 1996)

The company has been responsible for the introduction of new bridge systems and types, such as the composite strict box system (Vilobi d’Onyar and La Roca bridges over the A-7 motorway, 1993) or the abacus frame system (Bridges over the Jemseg and Saint John Rivers in Canada, 1998).

In addition to the development of these innovations, MC2 Estudio de Ingeniería, S.L. has also specialized in the design of purpose-made construction procedures for large works:

In terms of one-off and special buildings, MC2 Estudio de Ingeniería, S.L. has worked with prestigious Spanish and international architects, developing highly complex projects and designs and responding to the most demanding requirements imposed by the architectural conditions. These structures include tall buildings, communication towers and rehabilitation works.
